Remembering Ray Fishler

Former Rockville Centre resident and Holocaust survivor, Ray Fishler passed away on November 19, 2018 after a noble fight against pancreatic cancer. However, his memory and generosity will never be forgotten.  He will live on in the hearts and minds of countless individuals in the South Side Middle School community.

Ray shared his story of survival and the horrors he endured during the Holocaust with eighth grade students and staff annually on Acceptance Day, formerly known as Remembrance Day for the past twenty-five years. Despite the fact that he and his father were the only two members in his family to survive, his story lives on in his published memoir, Once We Were Eight. Ray’s message of hope and perseverance will carry on through our lessons at South Side Middle School, which celebrates awareness, respect, and kindness.  In addition, each June, the meritorious Ray Fishler Award will be bestowed upon a student who speaks up on behalf of others without fear of reprisal.

It was an honor to have had Ray Fishler in our lives.  He touched the hearts of all who met him.
